It is very important to do check ups of implant supported prosthetic replacements on a regular basis. It is a well known fact that conditions in the oral cavity are changeable. They change due to natural processes like teeth wearing away. Also, the parameters of the upper and lower jawbone differ due to the physiological processes progressing with time in human body. Moreover, when the teeth present during the implant - supported denture's fitting are lost, all the conditions shall be reassessed.
It is a common mistake to forget about check ups that shall be carried out regularly. The first two appointments following the last implant-supported appliance fitting take place with three months intervals while the subsequent visits with six to twelve months gaps. They are essential because natural teeth as well as implants need systematic control, what, in case of possible complications, helps the dentist to apply an appropriate treatment. If a patient does not come to see the dentist and after a longer period of time a pain or inflammation begins, the treatment may be of unsuccessfull. It may also be the case that the implant needs extracting. This should by no means cause fear but help our patients to realize that a tooth and an implant are differently placed in the jawbone.
Implant - supported prosthetic replacements need careful and frequent cleaning. One should brush, floss and use irrigators (a device that perfectly removes the remaining food with the help of a regulated water stream) to clean the appliances three times a day. On a properly cleaned restoration no stain or tartar should be visible and to assure this one should start with the irrigator, then brush and finally floss the device.
It is also recommended to use various mouth rinses, which help to maintain proper oral hygiene.
