Zirconium is a mineral which belongs to silicate group, commonly found in magma rocks in the form of crystals. It may be of various colours and is characterized by "cat's eye effect."
Numerous studies have indicated its specific features. It is relatively hard - to 7.5 in Mohs scale and the crystalline structure results in spectacular light scattering. Histological examination has proven that on the tissue level it is tolerated by living organisms extremely well and causes no allergic reactions, and most interestingly it has the ability to create bonds with the tissue structures. These specific properties of zirconium qualified it as part of the group of biocompatible materials used in medicine, including dentistry and implantology. When modified in a particular way and thus known as zirconium oxide it becomes a perfect alternative for metals used in dentistry as a skeleton for the porcelain crowns and bridges. It definitely enhances aesthetic effect and does not cause the dark or bluish gum around the edge of a crown. It also improves the stability of soft tissues or gum which is necessary to obtain a highly aesthetic appearance of false teeth.

Like any other material zirconium oxide has got some drawbacks, mainly related to its hardness. The harder it is, the more fragile it becomes and therefore it cannot be used in some specific situations.

To summarize, zirconium oxide is an excellent material for numerous procedures in dentistry as well as in implantology. However, it requires an individual approach and a proper assessment of the conditions in each case. Used without common sense it may bring about quite the opposite effect and patient dissatisfaction!
