The procedure is similar to preparing porcelain crowns, yet, it can replace a few teeth missing as it joins the false teeth into one construction. Bridges are most often indicated for teeth in the following cases:
- one or a few teeth are missing but only if the gap is located in a particular relation with the adjacent teeth
- the teeth are mobile
- a few teeth are too extensively damaged for treatment by other procedures
- the teeth are extensively worn out or there are many teeth missing what results in a considerable change of facial features.
There are numerous designs of bridges and possibilities of combining them with other prosthetic replacements. All of them are individually chosen for our patient's personal situation and are popular with their excellent aesthetic effect, comfortable use and being a long lasting solution. As bridges are fixed they also improve the patient's self-confidence.
This is an example of a bridge consisting of two combined crowns of medial upper incisors commonly known in Poland as "the ones". The dark edges of the crowns on the gum line immediately focus one's attention. Such colouring appears as the result of using porcelain attached on metal and of recessing gums. The upward recession of gums sometimes appears after a few years and is the result of natural physiological changes of one's periodontitis. Yet, this process can be accelerated by wrongly conducted hygiene (using a bad technique of brushing teeth), a crown that is placed too deep under the gum line or a wrong preparation of the tooth it self.
Another major drawback of that filling is its colour which does not match with the natural toothing. These crowns are also too short which disturbs the aesthetics of a smile. The treatment of the patient started from removing the old crowns and changing the preparation (the way the remaining parts of the teeth are polished). This helps to achieve better aesthetic result and fight the gum recession processes. As the material for the future crown the dentist has chosen porcelain built on Zirconium which imitates the translucency of natural teeth and helps to achieve better colour. The length of teeth has been corrected as well as the gradient of the lower teeth edges (called "the cutting edges") following the characteristic features of adjacent incisors.
